A 15-foot bronze statue of Superman welcomes visitors to Metropolis. Standing in front of the city courthouse, he keeps a watchful eye over the Super Museum located across the street. This museum contains "the absolute largest Superman collection on the planet." Movie props and costumes, toys from various decades and even life-size figures of Superman's friends and foes are on display here.
Each June, Metropolis plays host to a "Superman Celebration" that draws visitors from around the world. Celebrity guests from various Superman movies and television shows are some of the biggest draws, but there's also sporting events, talent shows, live music and entertainment, outdoor screenings of classic Superman serials and films, carnival rides, lots of food and even an annual "bank robbery" where Superman never fails to step in and stop the crooks.
Metropolis is home to the oldest state park in Illinois. Fort Massac State Park was given its designation in 1908. Its 1,540 acres provide opportunities for camping, hiking, boating, fishing, skiing, hunting and picnicking. A replica of the 1802 American fort also stands in the park. The area consists of 2 barracks, 3 block houses, officer quarters, well and stockade.
The rolling hills of our area are more suited to vineyards, horse riding, fishing and hunting, hiking and boating, and raising livestock. Yet within a short drive are towns and small cities to meet your educational, medical, or entertainment needs.
Every October, more than 100,000 visitors come to the Fort Massac Encampment, one of the largest tourist events in southern Illinois. With mock military battles, period costumes, fife & drum corps, traditional crafts, authentic food and more, it is truly amazing to see history brought to vivid life every fall.
